What is Reiki?
Being raised in a family suffering from major medical illnesses, I learned early on that I was a listener, a confidant, and an emotional healer just by the positive feedback of those around me. In the past as a bartender, I also realized that becoming a therapist would have been a great career option for me, too! But my plans were different!
Many have always confided in me, seeking an answer to their dilemmas.....random shoppers at the grocery store, passengers on a plane and anyone energetically drawn to me for whatever reason. And there's quite a bit of surprising energy out there. In fact, we are just oscillating bodies of energy walking around, often times paying no attention to our own vibration, taking our own energy for granted, and ignoring any energy shifts causing physical and/or emotional pain.
I knew in 2001, that before I completely understood exactly what Reiki was, I just needed to study the practice of Reiki, mainly for myself and for my stress level, later understanding that my stress was major anxiety, and repressed trauma. Alongside of this, I discovered another mystery about myself. I am an empath. As many clients consider this to be "a gift", I consider this to be a challenge to process daily energies around me. My husband will tell you I'm an introverted extravert! I love being loud, I love to laugh, I love seeing people and helping them even more, but I truly love my quiet time of solitude for reflection and decompression. This is why I practice Reiki each and every day, and became a Reiki Master in 2012. I've just recently completed my certification as a Trauma-Informed Coach as well, to help my clients have a better understanding of the "why" about themselves.....a better understanding of hidden and unknown, subtle traumatic imprints that affect daily life. Complex, yet so simple to understand when awareness takes place.
Because our culture has separated science from philosophy, the concept of such a subtle yet powerful life force energy has far existed outside the framework of modern Western medicine. It is challenging to explain the words Ki, Chi or Prana, as our Western culture does not even have an equivalent word for this type of energy in our culture. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a holistic method for connecting this universal energy with the body's natural powers of healing itself. Reiki's origins are from Japan, and are found in Tibetan sutras and in ancient records of cosmology and philosophy.
Reiki is performed by transmitting healing energy through the hands; however, it is not a transfer of one's own energy to another person. There are seven main chakras (energy centers) throughout the body, each one with a direct relationship to a physical body part, running from the crown of the head down to the tail bone. Some practitioners can see these chakras and some may have a sense of feeling for each chakra. I personally use a pendulum over each chakra, which can sway back and forth, clearly mimicking the energy of the body; and my pendulum is something the client can certainly see moving with their own eyes. The sway of the pendulum moving over the chakras can determine if there is an off-balance in the body, whether it be physical or emotional energy.
This is where both my client and I get to work. As a Reiki Master, I am attuned to help move any stagnant chakra energy of the body into a smoother vibration. The client, at this point, is to relax and be mindful of the sensations in their body, or their current thoughts, as the treatment is performed. Reiki is the hovering of healing hands, working with the existing energies of the body. I've had clients say they feel warm in one area, or cool in another. I've had clients feel as if my hand was at their shoulders, only for me to be standing by their feet. I've also been told that the client felt as though I was tipping the table that they were laying on. I definitely don't have the strength to lift a table with someone lying on it! It was just their own sensation while receiving the treatment.
This practice is not any religion. It's certainly not voodoo. It's definitely not magic. Anyone can receive Reiki. In fact, it's the skeptics who have the most profound reactions to treatment. Our bodies are simply made up of complex energy, and that energy is Real. Reiki is a Real thing. And most importantly, I'm often told I'm about as Real as they come. True story!
